If There’s A Rock, It Must be Climbed

Or a tree, for that matter.  We love to do it, but we weren’t planning to do much rock-climbing on this trip, for lack of space to bring the gear…but the Walters had other ideas, and are happily sharing their stuff.  And good thing too, because the city of Hyderabad is built in, and around, and using lots and lots of huge boulders.  Unfortunately, lots of them are getting blasted as the city sprawls, which is a shame because they add such character to the place.  There is a group here, trying to raise awareness.  Check ‘em out at www.SaveRocks.org.  And while they are still there, we will climb them.  By the way, I saw a guy the other day, scale a steel electrical pole like it was a coconut tree, and while he hung on with one hand and two bare feet, he used the other hand to fix something with the wires, which were sparking all the while.  Hmm.  I’ll stick to trees and rocks.

    Hello there,

Just curious, if you found any active boulderers or climbers in Hyderabad. I am relocating there, and would like to meet up fellow climbers.

    Rgds,

Not many, but then we didn’t really have much opportunity to be out on our own and try to. There is a gym in the Jubilee Hills area with a climbing wall…maybe a good place to run into others? We did meet a family with 2 teenage girls who are really into climbing, and getting pretty good. They are being trained by a Japanese guy who (from what I understand…we didn’t have opportunity to meet) is a) really good, and b) is trying to spread interest. I think he mostly boulders on his own though, for lack of partners. It is mostly bouldering in the area. And….there is also a Save the Rocks Society….maybe another good place to meet others? Good luck! I think our friends left a bouldering pad there if you’re interested.
