Puppies Gone Wrong

Puppies Gone Wrong

Even little furball puppies can be naughty when they get big enough to do some damage with those sharp little gotta-chew-on-everything teeth. Kai found that out one day when he was waaaaay across the playing field with no one close by to pull the little rascals off fast enough. But he was pretty proud of how many bandaids he got to sport on his arms afterwards. :)
A Haircut For Kai

A Haircut For Kai

If Spence thought he needed to worry about his hair gettin' awkward, it was nothing compared to Kai. Kai was starting to get mullet-head for real. The kids have had haircuts twice since we've been here, (a barber comes from Lumla and whips through everyone in a day....phew) but whenever I try to talk Kai into taking a turn on the chair, I get a big 'heck no way' in 2-year-old speak. I don't try too hard, though, because I figure he'd be too wiggly for those speedy scissors anyway. Anyway, it was time. ¬†We borrowed some clippers. Kai was…

Playing With Puppies #1

Got some quick videos of the boy and his puppy pals. Mostly boring if you're not one of the grandmas. Zzzzzz. :) In this one they are wrestling and bouncing up the steps. After the mama dog moved them out of the woodpile, she brought them by the guesthouse and apparently told them to stay with us. (Despite Kai, we really probably had one of the safest and calmest spots on campus...) They slept in a pile of 5 on a blanket under a table outside our room for awhile, and they were fun.
Small Pup

Small Pup

Boys and puppies just go together. It was probably inevitable with me around, but this boy sure does love critters. :) And there's nothing better than waggily little furballs that will follow you around and let you pick them up and share your snacks with you. (Yeah, we miss you, Baxter!)

Kai Style Compliments:

“Mom’s skirt is kind of brown. It looks like a Kung Fu sweater.”

Storyteller Kai

I'm loving getting to witness Kai's mastering of the English language. He amazes me with some of the thoughts he puts together sometimes, or words he comes up with (or remembers). And he's quite the little talker. He likes to tell stories. I haven't been too successful at capturing some of his best stuff...but here is some small chatter from Kai.

This Is How We…

Make do with no mirror when we need to see our hair after a bath. (An iPod camera works just great, thankyouverymuch.)

Rainy Day Stairs

It's a quiet rainy day. We're headed in for a bath and a nap after some good puddle & sand pile playin'. Squish. Squish. Squish. (Spence built this shortcut path and steps from our little guesthouse up to the main part of campus on a day when the power was down so he couldn't work on his computer. He's so cool.) P.s. As with any of our pics, if you're having trouble because of the ridiculously big size, just grab the corner of your browser and make it narrower and things will resize so you can view them smaller.
River Play Day

River Play Day

From the community where we are staying we can see rivers in the deep canyons below. One of the rivers originates in Eastern Arunachal Pradesh and the other originates in the high Himalayas of Tibet. From our guest house we can see the confluence of these two rivers, where they become a single river, just before it flows into Bhutan. We took a trip down to the river that is on the border of Bhutan. It was a two hour ride down in a jeep stuffed with the three of us plus a bunch of staff and volunteers from the…

Kabloooie!

I'm pretty sure when we look back, the year of being two will be all about rock-throwing. Boy loves rocks. It's hereditary. (And yep, those are his babies he's packin')
Jaybird

Jaybird

We love a good rainstorm. It makes big puddles. Which you have to play in. And then you lose your clothes. And even when your lips turn purple, you ARE NOT HAPPY that your mama says you have to stop throwing rocks because it's time for a nap.
Normal

Normal

Just in case you think our everyday is an adventure, here is something normal. This is what we spend most hours of most days doing right now: working on design projects in the office. If there is power. We just like to make the most of the rest of our time, and any opportunities for playin' that come along too. There you go. :)

A new handful of crawly friends. And we're just getting into the warm weather, so there's more to come... Enjoy!
Khartheng

Khartheng

All that construction work last weekend earned everyone a day off, so another volunteer, Adam, organized a handful of us to hike down the nearby village of Khartheng for a visit. The trail we took to get there went pretty much straight down the mountainside from the ridge Jhamtse Gatsal is on. But it got us there in a quick 30 minutes! Khartheng seems like a bigger village to me, full of traditional stone houses, with alleys winding between them, and surrounded by fields of crops. It was fun to be with the kids, who enjoyed pointing things out and…
Mmm Quinoa

Mmm Quinoa

I have been helping with an Experiential Education project here at Gatsal, experimenting with growing Quinoa (a nutritious grain). Quinoa originates in the Andes mountains of Peru, Bolivia, and Ecuador, a region possibly similar to the Himalayan mountains. Our friend Amma -- here teaching science from Jamaica -- is in charge, and I do what I can to help her and help teach the Class 8 & 9 kids who are working on the project. We've been doing lots of research, writing, and hands-on time in the garden, which is definitely the fun part. You can read more about the…

Wisdom by Kai

(going out, 5:30am)

I tell you I want my hat!
It’s chilly cold.
Chili is spicy…don’t eat.
Don’t eat sand. Blech!

Motorcycle

This is how he learned Sangpo's name. 'Cuz "Sangpo has a motorcycle!" I also now occasionally get "Mom, can I have a motorcycle?" :) Of course, Kai. Give it a decade or so, though. Ok?

Take a bath! Okay, kidding, only Kai is this lucky..... there are no giant buckets for the rest of us. ;) There's an audio clip if you really want to listen in on Kai pouring, splashing, jumping, chattering... but don't spend 20+ minutes doing only that. Press play while you get something else done, and think of it like one of those meditational ocean-sounds-in-the-background CDs. Lol.
For Post!

For Post!

Just wanted to share the Best Birthday Bus ever! Kai is being silly because we are taking pictures for you, Post. :) He loves his Syncro. It's even been driven through a mud puddle. Oops! MamaJ, your talents inspire us. LOVE & THANKS!!!
Happy Birthday Hike

Happy Birthday Hike

2 years old! What a better way to spend part of the day, than an exploratory hike into the jungle? We found lots of trees with character, mushrooms, moss, bugs, and hiked home with a couple of chattery Monpa ladies from a nearby village. Happy Birthday Kai!!

Cool Bugs By Kai: a Fuzzy Moth

Cool Bugs By Kai: a Fuzzy Moth

Brace yourselves. We find so many sweet (crazy, huge, different) bugs that are worth sharing, that you'll be seeing lots of them on here. Here's one: a fuzzy head moth. So cool that Kai had to run inside and find my sunglasses to look at it. ;)

Entourage

Kai with a gaggle of girls. All the attention is overwhelming sometimes, but today he's eating it up. (And look how well trained he is to stop and pose when the camera comes out! Lol.)
Snow Lions and Smooches

Snow Lions and Smooches

A special day with traditional dance performances here at JG. Kai LOVED the snow lion dance. He was quite disappointed to be whisked into the prayer hall, only to find kids coming out of the furry costumes. But he came back with a lipstick-smooched face, courtesy of one of the other dancers, so it couldn't have been all bad. :)

Making Friends

Just some low-key playing with rocks and a new friend. I think little Tharpa is 8+ months older than Kai. Holy smokes we have a giant!
Made It!

Made It!

And the World's Best Momos were waiting. Ah, Heaven. By the way, you can also follow us while we are here at Jhamtse Gatsal, on the Gatsal News Blog: www.jhamtse.net/blog You'll get a more general idea of what's going on around us at the community (cuz we all know that this blog is going to turn into the Kai Show, lol).
Ready to Roll

Ready to Roll

Here we go again! Welcome to our new blog. We'll get all the old content back on here, and fill in the gaps....eventually. For now, we will start with our latest adventuring: beginning in February 2013, and for the next year(ish), the 3 of us are living and volunteering and having fun at Jhamtse Gatsal Children's Community, in the Himalayan foothills of eastern India. Enjoy!
