River Play Day

River Play Day

From the community where we are staying we can see rivers in the deep canyons below. One of the rivers originates in Eastern Arunachal Pradesh and the other originates in the high Himalayas of Tibet. From our guest house we can see the confluence of these two rivers, where they become a single river, just before it flows into Bhutan. We took a trip down to the river that is on the border of Bhutan. It was a two hour ride down in a jeep stuffed with the three of us plus a bunch of staff and volunteers from the…
Normal

Normal

Just in case you think our everyday is an adventure, here is something normal. This is what we spend most hours of most days doing right now: working on design projects in the office. If there is power. We just like to make the most of the rest of our time, and any opportunities for playin' that come along too. There you go. :)
Khartheng

Khartheng

All that construction work last weekend earned everyone a day off, so another volunteer, Adam, organized a handful of us to hike down the nearby village of Khartheng for a visit. The trail we took to get there went pretty much straight down the mountainside from the ridge Jhamtse Gatsal is on. But it got us there in a quick 30 minutes! Khartheng seems like a bigger village to me, full of traditional stone houses, with alleys winding between them, and surrounded by fields of crops. It was fun to be with the kids, who enjoyed pointing things out and…
Mmm Quinoa

Mmm Quinoa

I have been helping with an Experiential Education project here at Gatsal, experimenting with growing Quinoa (a nutritious grain). Quinoa originates in the Andes mountains of Peru, Bolivia, and Ecuador, a region possibly similar to the Himalayan mountains. Our friend Amma -- here teaching science from Jamaica -- is in charge, and I do what I can to help her and help teach the Class 8 & 9 kids who are working on the project. We've been doing lots of research, writing, and hands-on time in the garden, which is definitely the fun part. You can read more about the…

Haircut! After two and a half months I decided it was time to cut my hair and beard. I was afraid it would  become a skullet (a mullet that is bald on the top). We borrowed some trimmers from Lobsang. My beard was also not the nicest sight. Unfortunately I do not have before pictures. :)
Happy Birthday Hike

Happy Birthday Hike

2 years old! What a better way to spend part of the day, than an exploratory hike into the jungle? We found lots of trees with character, mushrooms, moss, bugs, and hiked home with a couple of chattery Monpa ladies from a nearby village. Happy Birthday Kai!!
Made It!

Made It!

And the World's Best Momos were waiting. Ah, Heaven. By the way, you can also follow us while we are here at Jhamtse Gatsal, on the Gatsal News Blog: www.jhamtse.net/blog You'll get a more general idea of what's going on around us at the community (cuz we all know that this blog is going to turn into the Kai Show, lol).
Ready to Roll

Ready to Roll

Here we go again! Welcome to our new blog. We'll get all the old content back on here, and fill in the gaps....eventually. For now, we will start with our latest adventuring: beginning in February 2013, and for the next year(ish), the 3 of us are living and volunteering and having fun at Jhamtse Gatsal Children's Community, in the Himalayan foothills of eastern India. Enjoy!
